Four Devils (photoplay edition)

Four Devils (photoplay edition)

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. Red Cloth lettered in black. First edition thus, the "photoplay" edition based on the lost F.W. Murnau Fox Pictures silent film starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Morton. Novelization by Guy Fowler of the Danish novella by Herman Bang. Illustrated with scenes from the film. 236 pp. plus publisher's list at rear. A tight, near fine copy, touch of fade to the spine strip. No jacket. Bang wrote the novella, in Danish, in the 1880s and was first adapted for film in Denmark in 1911. William Fox brought Murnau form Germany to direct the film; it was originally released as a silent but was pulled from distribution and 25% sound (sound effects, music, and dialogue) was added over the objections of Murnau. Neither version is know to have survived. The plot revolves around four orphans living with a circus with sinister goings on and a mean guardian. An old clown takes them under his wing, protects them and trains them to become a high wire act. This was one of Janet Gaynor's earliet film roles and was a year before she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1929 for her performances in three movies released in 1927 and 1928 (the only time an actress won an one Oscar for multiple roles). Very Good. Item #E27252
