The Results of Emancipation

Boston: Walker, Wise and Company, 1863. First American edition. Hardcover. First American edition and first edition in English, translated from the French original "L'Abolition de l'Esclavage (1861). xiv+ 412 pp. Rebound in modern maroon buckram with spine lettered in gilt, fine, new endpapers. Pierre-Suzanne-Augustin Cochin, French politican and writer, was staunch opponent of slavery and as such was an ardent supporter of the Union during the American Civil War. This work, divided into three parts, deals with slavery, its abolition, and ramifications first in and in most detail the French colonies; secondly in the English colonies; and lastly in the colonies of Denmark, Sweden and Holland. The book was translated into English and enjoyed significant study in the United States, for obvious reasons, during the Civil War and the time mof the emancipation of the slave population. Very Good. Item #E26912
