Born in Virginia, he attended West Point, a classmate of Sherman, and distinguished himself in the Mexican War. He returned to West Point as an instructor and when the Civil War erupted, remained loyal to the Union. He built an outstanding record in battles at Mill Springs, Stone River, Perryvoille and Chickamauga. He was promoted to command the Army of The Cumberland and engineered the Union victory at Chattanooga. After following Sherman through Georgia, he returned to Tennessee and defeated Hood at Nashville. Thomas was still on active duty when he died in 1870. Near Fine / fine. Item #E26373
