Cy Young: A Baseball life

Amherst, MA: University of Massachusetts Press, 2000. Hardcover. Fine in bright, crisp dust jacket. Hardcover. 283 pp. with bibliography, index. Illustrated with photographs. Boiography of the greatest pitcher in major league history, Denton True ("Cy") Young (1867-1955). A native of Gilmore, Ohio, Young entered the major leagues in 1890 with the Cleveland Spiders of the National League and played for then through the 1898 season. He had already gained the nickname "Cy" (for "cyclone" due to the speed of his fast ball). The owner of the Spiders had bought the St. Louis team as well (the practice of owning interests in more that one league team was allowed in those days) and transfered some of his players, including Young, to that franchise. When the American League was founded in 1901, Young jumped to the Boston club and threw the first pitch in the first modern World Series in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He rejoined Cleveland in 1909 and finished his major league career with a brief final stay with the Boston Braves in 1911. Young recorded a staggering 511 wins in the major leagues, a record probable to stand for all time (the second most career wins belong to Walter Johnson with 417). He was a member of the inaugural 1936 group of Hall of Fame inductees and was present in Cooperstown in 1939 at the first formal induction ceremony and opening of the building. The annual award for the best pitcher in each of the two leagues is named in his honor. Fine / fine. Item #E26071
