Inspired by his lifelong love of Thoreau's "Walden", Derleth used that inspiration to observe and write about the land and people he knew best in Sac Prairie, Wisconsin (his "Walden West"). Here he described the land. the changing seasons, the beconing, mysterious river, the hills which suggest that some part of man's existence is immutable; he provides poignant studies of the people of Sac Prairie, setting down their moods and histories, and his compassion for them.
