Campaign Addresses of Governor Alfred E. Smith Democratic Candidate For President 1928 (in original dust jacket)

Washington DC: The Democratic National Committee, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. First edition. Red cloth lettered in gilt. Frontipiece photographic portrait of Smith and seven additional photo plates. 322 pp. A tight, fine example in an unusually well preserved dust wrapper, a hint of fade to the spine strip. Collection of addresses delivered by New York Governor Alfred e. Smith during is unsuccessful campaign for President in 1928. The collection begins with his acceptance address for the democratic nomination and concludes with a transcript of his November 13, 1928 post-election radio address. Al Smith (1873-1944) was four time Governor of New York and ran against Herbert Hoover for the Presidency, being the first Roman Catholic to attain the nomination for any party in U.S. history (a fact that worked against him in the election). Hoover, riding a wave of "Prohibition, Prejudice, and Properity" as well as benefiting from a failed democratic attempt to reapportion Congress follwoing the 1920 census, won in a landslide. Smith later competed with Franklin Roosevelt for the 1932 Democratic nomination (unsuccessfully) and was a vehement opponent of The New Deal. He also was, as early as 1933, a vocal opponent of the Nazis. Fine / near fine. Item #E25946
