Magda Goebbels: The Fisrt Lady of The Third Reich

New York: Dial Press, 1980. First American edition. Hardcover. First American edition. Translated from the German by Gwendolen Mary Keeble. Hardcover. 288 pp. with bibliography, index. Illustrated with photographs. Fine in bright, crisp, price clipped dust jacket with short clsed tear rear panel. She had wit, refinement, blonde Nordic beauty, all the social graces; he was a small, talkative, ugly man with a limp. She fell under his spell in 1930 at a mass meeting in Berlin and six months later married him (with Adolph Hitler as witness). She was Johanna Maria Magdelena "Magda" Ritschel and he was Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany's Propaganda Minister. He was at the top level of the Nazi ruling machine and she became a close friend of Hitler. During the war, she trained as a Red Cross nurse, worked (sometimes) in an electronics factory, and entertained foreign heads of state and their wives, hence being called the "First Lady of the Third Reich" (though some thought Emmy Goring was). She was in the bunker with Hitler and other high ranking Nazis, as well as with her six children, when the Red Army entered Berlin in April, 1945. She either ordered the children murdered with cyanide after being drugged into unconciousness, or possibly did it herself. She a her husband then committed suidide. Fine / very good. Item #E25887
