Ftronispiece portrait engraving of Abigail Adams, tissue guard, lxi (The Memoir) + 472 pp. Very good, some sunning to the spine strip but lettering clear, shallow fraying head edge of the spine; neatly repaired hinges, binding tight. The letters of Abigail Adams mostly to her husband, Founder John Adams. Arranged chronologically, the collection begins with a 1761 letter to Mrs. H. Lincoln written when Abigail was 17 years old regarding her willingness to correspond and give some of her views on life. The bulk of the corespondence was with John, with a few to other friends Miss Cranch, Mrs. Shaw, Thomas Jefferson or to John Quincy, and concludes in 1816. Appended to this edition is a series of eleven letters written by John Quincy Adams to his son on the study of the Bible. One of the most erudite and accomplished of our First Ladies and a woman well ahead of her time, Abigail's correspondence with her husband touched all aspects of colonial life, the American Revolution, the early Federal period, her trips to England and Europe with John, obsrvations on people, places and events.
