Justine or, Misfortunes of Virtue. Marquis de Sade.

Justine or, Misfortunes of Virtue

New York: Castle, 1964. Hardcover. Hardcover. 128 pp. Very good, offsetting to the endpapers and embrowning to the pages. In dust jacket with wear and a bit of shallow chipping about the edges. The most famous of the writings of de Sade, the tale, set just before the French Revolution, of Justine, a maiden we meet when she is 12 years old and follow until she reaches the age of 26. Under the disguise of virtue, she is presented with a series of sexual situations and sado-machosism. De Sade conceived the work while imprisoned in the Bastille in 1787. It was his first published book when an extended and more graphic version appeared in 1791. Needless to say, it was a banned book in the U.S. and the U.K., the first unexpurgated edition not appearing in print until the 1953 Grove Press publication. Very Good / very good. Item #E25826
