Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1943. Softcover. Oversized in color illustrated wrappers. Tasseled blue string and staple bound. (18) pp. Illustrated with reproductions of the color drawings of the major characters by Dan Sayre Groesbeck (Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, Akim Tamiroff, Joseph Calleia, Katina Paxinou, Vladimir Sokoloff) as well as with photographs from the production, from the film and of Ernest Hemingway. In bright, fine condition. This offering includes the seldom seen patterned sepia glassine wrapper that was stapled over the covers as well as the virtually never seen original envelope with the printed title band in red and yellow. The glassine has a small chip at the lower stapleand some tears and chipping to the rear wrap. The envelope is worn and creased. Hemingway's classic novel of the Spanish Civil War was originally published by Scribners in 1940; Paramount bought the film rights and Hemingway himself hand picked Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman to star in the movie (it was Bergman's first role in Technicolor). The film garnered nine Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture, Best Actor for Cooper and Best Actress for Bergman, winning two (for Best Supporting Actress for Karina Paxinou and for original soundtrack).
