Illustrated with photographs and reproductions. The Folies Bergere, the most famous music hall in the world, opened in Paris in May, 1869. The sumptious establishement offered top entertainment but also was a place whene high-class courtesans plied their trade. The "grandes cocottes" of the early 1900s, many of whom began their careers as dancers, attracted even the crowned heads of Europe to the Folies. The first nude appeared in 1911 and from there, the Folies became a landmark for such artistic displays by performers. The music hall aspect was also a great attraction and featured such eventual luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, maurice chevalier, Barbette and Ferdinand,Josephine Baker, Anna Pavoloa, and Mati Hari.
