Engraved frontispiece "Landing Of Columbus" and smaller engraving "Discoverers Of The Compass' on title page. 239 pp. A tight example but with some shallow holing primarily to the cloth of the spine strip. Light 1857 ownership name and place front pastedown. Transcriptions of five discourses (plus the two additional discourses noted in the sub-title) delivered during the lecture season of 1853-54 in New York, Boston, Cincinnati, Washington, and Baltimore. The frist two pieces deal with Columbus and his successors in the New World, the aborigines and missionaries, Catholics and the American Revolution, and the Church in the early Republic. The two additional discourses involve the historical relatation between Ireland and America as well as the then actual relations. Appended are the will of Christopher Columbus and letter and Papal bull 1493 of Pope Alexander VI in relation to the discovery of America as well as a 1537 letter of Paul III declaring American Indians to be "rational people".
