Jones (1882-1975) was the founder and long-time president of the Piney Woods Country Life School in rural Rankin, Mississippi. The child of educators, he graduated from the University of Iowa and in 1908 took a teaching job at a school for African American children in Utica, Mississippi. When he learned that Rankin County had an eighty percent illiteracy rate, he started the Piney Woods School with $2, three students, and the donation of 40 acres of land and an abandoned shed from former slave. He spent the rest of his life supporting the education of Black children in nthe segregated South. Fine / very good. Item #E25112
