Les Chats (first Rotterdam edition 1728)

Rotterdam: Jean Daniel Beman, 1728. First edition thus. Leather_bound. 16mo. vii (Preface) + 204+ (11, Table des Matieres). Ten plates (2 folding) which is correct for this edition. Engraved title page, engraved head and tail pieces. Text in French. Rebound in handsome modern full calf with incised outine of a cat and "Les Chats" on the front board. Light two-line inscription on the title page that indenitfies the author and his date of death as "12 Novembre1770 age 83". The text is quite clean with some embrowning to the Preface pages but virtually no foxing thereafter. Published anonymously, Moncrif's "Les Chats" was the first book devoted entirely to the subject of cats. It was first printed in Paris in 1727, the year before this edition was published by Beman of Rotterdam. It is composed as eleven letters and ten poems to a lady of the Court and includes, in addition to some historical and scientific feline matters, love-letters by cats, fables, a play for cats complete with feline chorus. Of the tn plates, some are historical while others are more playful. The book was an immediate success but was soon parodied and satirized to such an extent that Moncrif had it omitted from his collected works; perhaps apocrafally, when Moncrif was presented at the Academie Francais, someonetossed a cat onto the floor. Very Good. Item #E24749DD
