Tennis

New York: Scribners, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. First edition. Hardcover in pale green cloth. Illustrations by the author, mostly instructural but featuring top players of the day such as Bill Tilden, Rene Lacoste, Elizabeth Ryan, Suzanne Lenglen, etc. Very good, light soiling to front cover and spine, mtop right corner of the rear cover soiled. Partially a memoir but mostly an instructional volume by the most famous female American tennis player til the late 1960s. and the most noted and best woman player in the world in her time. She was the top player in the world for most of the late 1920s and through the 1930s, winning 31 Grand Slam tounaments including 19 singles titles. Her 8 Wimbleton wins stood as a record until Martina Navratilova won her ninth in 1990. A tall, graceful athlete, she became a global celebrity as well as a fashion plate, wearing shorter, knee-lenght skirts rather than the longer attire previous the standard. She was in her time and in her sport as famous as Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey in theirs, though her on court demeanor (Grantland Rice called her "Little Miss Poker-Face") did not add to her popularity. Very Good. Item #E24612
