Original Playbill magazine for the week of Monday, June 23, 1952 for the original Broadway production of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I" at the St. James Therter in New York. Very good. Gertrude Lawrence and Yul Brenner, both of whom originated the roles, appeared as Anna Leonowens and The King. The play was based on Maragret Landon's 1944 novel "Anna and The King of Siam". The stage adaptation was a smash hit, running for 1246 performances over three years. It won Tony Awards Best Musical, Best Actress (Lawrence), and Best Featured Actor (Brenner). Gertrude Lawrence died of cancer a year and a half into the run. It was the basis for the hit 1956 movie of the same name with Brenner reprising his role as The King (for which he won a Best Actor Oscar) and Deborah Kerr as Anna. Very Good. Item #E24602
