First edition in two volumes. 365 and 387 pp. Bound in three quarter polished dark blue morocco over lighter blue cloth boards, spine labels in red and green and lettered and ornately decorated in gilt. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Fine, bright examples, small spot to the outer portion of the rear cloth of Vol. II. Melville third book, it begins as an adventure/travelogue (consistent with his earlier “Typee” and “Omoo”) of an American whaling sailor in the South Seas. After beginning as a narrative, the book shifts to a philosophical discourse between characters and their interactions to the places they visit. Considered by literary commentators as a critical bridge between Melville’s earlier, largely autobiographical works, and “Moby Dick”. Fine. Item #E24440
