London: J. Richardson, 1757. Second edition. Leather_bound. Octavo in oriignal plain calf, hubbed spines lined in gilt but apparently never lettered. (1) xvi+ 4 (Contents)+ 1 (Errata and with publisher's advert on the recto)+ 432 (1). 12 folding plates (No. X bound in follwoing No. 11). Illustrated throughout with mathematical formulae. Firm in its binding though the leather is worn and cracked along the outer hinges, shallow loss at the foot edge of the spine. There is an old ownership signature (Edwin Haas) on the front free endpaper and a somewhat later signature (Rob. Brooke) and date of 1794 on the title page, and both pastedown and endpapers have extensive mathematical equations and drawings, apparently contemporary, in pencil. Text is generally clean, with a few equations at the bottom of the final page. Wiliam Emerosn (1701-1782) was an English mathematician, somewhat eccentic, but known for the rigorous testing of any mechanical proposiitons or inventions before he would publish them. His "Doctrine of Fluxions" was his most popular work and for many years was used in the English education system as the basic calculus textbook. It went ot at least editions, each corrected and revised from the previous, in the first two decades after its first publication in 1743. Good. Item #E24411
