Misfits!: The Cleveland Spiders in 1899 A Day-By-Day Narrative of Baseball Futility

McFarland & Company, 1991. First edition. Hardcover. First printing. Fine. Issued without dust jacket. Hardcover. Viii+ 216 pp. with bibliography, index, appendix of team player career biographies, team nicknames, 1899 roster and statistics. The day-by-day story of the statistically worst team ever to play in the major leagues, the Cleveland “Spiders” of 1899. Previous Cleveland teams in the National Association, National League and then-major-league level American Association had been, on and of, a fairly successful franchise; though never a pennant winner they did win the Temple Cup in 1895 then losing the series the following year. In 1899, however, the team owners Frank and Stanley Robison, purchased a second team (in St. Louis) and thinking to find that pasture greener, transferred virtually all of the Spiders’ best players to that franchise (Cy Young, Jesse Burkett, Bobby Wallace). The result was a rag tag group of remainders that won only 20 games while losing 134; the team disbanded following the season. As New. Item #E24289
