Darrow (1857-1938) was one of the most prominent American lawyers of the first decades of the 20th century, involved in t3wo of the highest profile cases of his time--the Leopold and Loeb murder trial and the Scopes "Monkey" Trial. He began his career as a corporate lawyer, switching to labor law in the closing years of the 19th century, and eventually to criminal law around 1911. He was a prominent member of the American Civil Liberties Union and a staunch opponent of the death penalty.
