Volume 1 (all issued). 8vo in original paper covered boards over leather spine. 252 pp. plus 25 "Journal Of News, Foreign And Domestic" supplement+ 3 page index. Extremely worn, interior with significant foxing and staining particularly to the first and last few leaves. Top corner of title page torn away not affecting text. Front endpaper chipped about the edges and bearing multiple ownership signatures ranging from an apparently contemporary one of Elizabeth and Joseph Brown, a signature of "Elizabeth A. Smith" who has also signed the Preface page with an 1841 date, and another signature and 1938 date. Rear endpaper half torn away and rear pastedown with an old but undated Philadelphia ownership notation and other ink scribbles. According to Allison's Preface, the Visiter was intended as a "Miscellaneous Magazine...its contents to be exclusively literary...". It contains various pieces on diverse subjects such as literature, Christianity, quite a few on agricultural topics, poetry, etc. and in 10 parts, "Some Account Of My Neighbour Ephraim" authored by Samuel J. Smith of Burlington though he is not credited. Sold "as is". Laid in is a 1938 invoice (for $4) on his letterhead form Early American book dealer James Lewis Hook of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa. Poor.
