Uncommon. a work that deals with waht was essentially Indian territory during the Civil War, the middle northwestern region containing Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. The military Deparment of The Northwest was essentially an orphan force that had been organized in 1862 to deal with the Sioux uprising.
