During the Civil War, Sylvanus Cadwallader was a correspoindent first for the Chicago Times and later the New York Herald. He spent the better part of three years with Ulysses S. Grant and the manuscript for this book (which was never published) provides a portrait of the general's personality and military leadership from the point of view of a civilian.
