Wood, the grandson of Zachary Taylor and the nephew of Jefferson Davis, ws the scion of family deeply divided by the Civil War. When hostilites erouped, he resigned his commission at the U.S. Naval Academy and accpeted a lieutentant's commission in the Confederate Navy. He commande the aft gun in the battle between the CSS Virgnia an the USS Montr, led several river raids in Vinginia and North Carolina, and in 1864, while commanding the CSS Tallahassee, captured over thirty Union merchant vessels duringa three week period.
