Scribner's notecard affixed to the front free endpaper with the ink inscription, "With the compliments of the author--30 Broad St. New York, NY". Very good in edgeworn, chipped dust jacket with spine sticker from the below. This copy deaccessioned by a well-known institution founded in 1862 as a patriotic organization and in still in existance today as a private club. Our letter detailing this will be included. No stampings or markings in this copy but with the institution's bookplate front pastedown. A military history not only of the Vicksburg campaign but the first biography of Confederate General John C. Pemberton. Pemberton was a Northerner (from Philadelphia) and West Point graduate (Class of 1`833) who fought with the U.S. Army in the Mexican and Seminole wars but at the start of the Civil War resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army. He quickly rose to the rank of Major General. In October, 1862 he was put in command of the defense of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The author of this book was the grandson of Pemberton. Very Good / fair.
