Dolores Ibarrui (1895-1989) was known as "La Pasionaria" (The Passionflower) was a Basque politician and Republican heroine of the Spanish Revolution of 1936-39. She was an early member of the Spanish Communist Party and in 1933 founded Mujeres Antifascistas, a womens party devoted to fascism amd war. She was elected to the Spanish Parliament in 1936; over the next years she was a powerful voice for the republican forces and was allied with Stalin and the Communist presence in the fight against fascist forces but was forced into exile when Stalin allied himself with France and England, essentially turing his back on the Spanish Republic.
