Philadelphia: State Temperance Society, 1837. First edition. Pamphlet. Rare. Printed wrappers over paper cloth spine, front cover engraving "Lifting The Mortgage, or the Drunkard Reformed Signing the Pledge". 36 pp. Four additional wood engravings in the text. Shallow chipping to the edge opf the front page not affecting the border decoration, very shallow dogearing to the page corners, final page slightly clipped to the top corner. The interior is generally bright with only a touch of light foxing. OCLC loctaes two copies only including a volume of the 1836 and 1837 issues bound together. "Pennsylvania" does not appear in the title of the 1836 issue. OCLC locates no more than two copies of any year of issue between 1834 and 1837. The Pennsylvania Temperance Society was originally the Pennsylvania Society for the Discouraging the Use of Ardent Spirits (1827). In 1834, some 150 local temperance societies , including 30 in Philadelphia alone, consolidated into the Pennsylvania Temperance Society. Very Good. Item #E23403
