Two volumes, first editions. 12mo. in three quarter original black calf over marbled paper covered boards, with spine lettering, lining and fleurons in gilt. 300 and 276 pp. Leather rubbed and spine extremities chipped, boards rubbed. Bindings tight, endpapers well foxed, 1833 dated ownership signature in Volume II. Oval presentation stamp on the tille pages and two additional 19th scholl stamps on the front pastedown of Volume I and the title page of Vol. II. Occasional staining in the text. A scarce early 19th century American work of historical romance fiction, written by a woman. (Evans 15732; OCLC locates 8 copies). A young man sails to the New World, his first sight of which is the houses of the Pilgrims, tucked in the wilderness, Harriet Vaughn Cheney (nee: Foster; 1796-1889) was a Massachusetts-born American-Canadian novelist. Her first book was published in Boston in 1820 and was followed with this novel four years later. She would later marry a Canadian and move to Montreal where she and her sister founded a monthly girl's magazine titled "The Snow Drop" Good. Item #E22902
