Published during World War I, a novel of a peaceable New England clammer and small farmer, his wife, and two young children. The story proceeds with descriptions of everyday, normal life around the area but , though insulated from the war, it is never far from eveyone's thoughts; when gazing out over their little harbor, they consider submarines and whether the enemy can reach them.
