Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich

Free Press, 2007. Hardcover. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 381 pp. with index. Illustrated with photographs. Biography of basketball legend "Pistol" Pete Maravich (1947-1988). More than a biography of a ballplayer, it's the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father's dreams---and the cost of that dream. With his shaggy locks and floppy socks, he averaged 44.2 points a game at Louisiana State University, establishing records never to be broken, His personality made him basketball's Elvis and more importantly, as a white Southern sports star (though he was born in Pennsylvania), helped sell Middle America on a largely black man's game. He debuted in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks in 1971 then joined the expansion New Orleans (later Utah) Jazz for the 1975 season. Forced by bad knees to retire prematurely, Maravich was elected to the the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. After his playing days were over, he became a virtual recluse, eventually turning to evangelical Christianity. He died of heart failure at age 40. New / new. Item #E21643x
