Andersonville Violets: A Story of Northern and Southen Life

Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1889. First edition. Hardcover. Scarce. First edition (1889 on title page and 1888 on copyright page as is correct). Hardcover in pale olive green decorated cloth, lettered in black and with design of a bunch of violets. 270 pp. plus 10 pp. publisher's ads at rear. A tight, generally fine example, a trace of rubbing to the green leaves in the cover design, a very small split head of spine as well as a shallow light crease. Published some 23 years after the end of the Civil War but in a era when sectional feeling ran high (especially on the subject of the treatment of prisoners of war, the story of an Andersonville prisoner, John Rockwell, who steps beyond the "dead line" to pick a bunch of violets and the Confederate guard, Jack Foster, who ignores orders and decides not to shoot him. The novel was very well received and considered an attempt to heal the ill feelings on both sides and portray the soldiers of thye North and the South as men rather than as raw numbers. Fine.
