In 1846, John Banvard, who wanted to "paint the biggest picture in the world", unrolled before the audience the first of the huge, moving "panoramas" of the Mississippi. These entertainments spread around the world, providing the public with a combination newsreel-travelogue-documentary "movie" in which one long pictorial canvass rolled between two revolving cylinders.
