Based on a series of letters writen by Nott, who was an officer in the Fifth Iowa Cavalry as well as a New York City school official, to the students of the North Moore Street School in that city to familiarize them with various aspects of the Civil War. Inhis preface to this, the second edition, Nott says that these letters were never intended for an adult readership nor to be published in book form. The first printing was issued while he wa still on active duty in the Department of The Gulf; this second edition he decided to publish for the benefit of disabled soldiers and in the expectation of "..opening for them a profitable field of employment..." . The subjects of the various letters includes, hospitals, Donelson and the assult at that place, foraging, scouting, "The Escape", etc. Very Good. Item #E19337
