Sister Carrie

New York: Harper & Bros, 1912. First edition thus. Hardcover. First edition thus, the final, expurgated edition. Patterned light grey-blue cloth lettered in dark blue and decorated in darker blue. 557 pp. A tight, bright, generally fine example with a hint of sunning at the outer edges of the spine strip. There are some bibliographical pencilled notations on the front free endpaper, which we have preserved, that describe a comparison between this edition and the surpressed 1900 first edition. The very rare first edition of 1900 was surpressed due to its subject matter (a small town 18 year old moves to Chicago and becomes a kept woman and later an actress). Only 1008 copies were printed after Dreiser insisted that Doubleday, McClure honor their contract to publish despite internal objections to it but they refused to advertise it and only 485 copies were sold. A totally unexpurgated editioin did not appear until 1981. fine. Item #E15712
