Thick 8vo hardcover in original publisher's black glossy leather, ornately blindstamped, spine titled in gilt and circular gilt decoration of three horses on front cover. Marbled endpapers. 600 pp. with glossary of scientific and technical terms, general index and table of symptoms. Single leaf advert tipped in at rear. Illustrated with full and partial page engravings and drawings. A tight, firm, bright example, only light edge rubbing--very unusual thus; light crescent dampstaing top inner corner of all leaves; pages bright but with scattered foxing. There is a small contemporary Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) veterinary surgeon's ownership stamp upper corner of the first blank and title page and a later (1895) ownership signature from a family member also on the first blank. Extensive work on the American horse with chapters including "Brief History of The Horse", "Outline of the Structure of the Horse", diseases of the foot, bones, glands and nasal membranes, eye, muscles and tendons, skin and ears, brain and nervous system, teeth and mouth, throat, chest and lungs, heart, blood, bowels, etc. Also includes a chapter on poisonous snakes and insects, breeding and stock raising, marks of age and abuse, gentling, breaking and training, fractures, shoeing and "Vices and Unsoundness of the Horse".
