The First Battle: A Story of the Campaign of 1896

Chicago: McConkey, 1896. First edition. Hardcover. First edtion. Hardcover in original publisher's decorated binding of navy blue cloth with spine lettered in gilt and front cover lettered in silver with oval portrait of Bryant in silver. 629 pp. , index to speeches and documents, 53 full page photographic illustrations. Political memoirs of the 1896 presidential campaign of one of the most famous Americans never to be elected President, William Jennings Bryant (he ran and lost three times: 1896, 1900 and 1908). The major issue of the day was that of bi-metalism and Bryant was strongly in favor of "free silver" policy to increase the amount of currency in circulation. A tight, generally fine example, spine a bit dulled, paper somewhat embrowned as usual in this cheaply produced volume meant for wide circulation among the "common man" Near Fine. Item #E13277
