Boy's and Girl's Illustrated Olio

NY: S.S. Union, 1856. Hard Cover. (n.d., internally dated 1856) Square 12mo. in dark brown cloth stamped in gilt; 180 pps. Profusely illustrated with full and partial page and vignette wood engravings. Intended, as per the prefactory note, as a holiday gift-book, a collection of short pieces for the education and edification of young people. The first two pieces are Christmas related---"Christmas and Christmas Carols" and "The Legend of the Chrstmas Tree"; there are others about various birds (owls, the eagle, pheasant), foreign lands, King Arthur;s Round Table, etc. The front free endpaper bears an interesting contemporary ink inscription: "Book of Honor: To some deserving member of the Fairmount Sabbath School, this book is given by the Superintendent on each sabbath, to be retained one week. (signed) Daniel Warren". Warren's signature and the date of Jan, 31, 1863 appears again on the rear endpaper and yet again on the half title. Foxing and small stains throughout the text, loss along the front gutter and rounded corners. Item #CH151
