Though Gaelic Ulster was defeated in 1603, its religion was not and adhered to a form of pre-Reformation Catholicism; the Old English ahered to the secular clergy and served the Counter-Reformation. The Protestant Church, nominally Anglican, was actually Calvinist; here were Scots Presbyterians planted in Ulster; the Roman Catholics were royalists but could not in the end be loyal to both king and Pope.
