Firts edition. N.d. (ca. 1913). Red cloth lettered in gilt. 234 pps. with final (blank) leaf a cancel. 32 monochrome photographic plates including frontis of Ray driving out of the fairway with his ever-present pipe clencjed between his teeth. Extremely scarce work by one of golf's early greats. A famously long hitter for his day (which would have been, what, 220 yards?), Edward "Ted" Ray won the 1912 British Open (the first time he played in it). He won the U.S. Open in 1920 but was a key player in the 1913 U.S. Open when he engaged in the famous playoff for the championship with Harry Vardon and the eventual winner, Francis Ouimet. This event was the subject of the recent film "The Greatest Game Ever Played". Ray also competed for several years with England's Ryder Cup team. A very, nice, tight copy, cloth clean and all gilt bright. Discrete vintage prev. own. sig. front pastedown. A lovely, collectible copy of a very desirable and extremely difficult to find golfing book.
