Very rare. One page, partially printed document on "Haymaker Base Ball Club" letterhead, aprox. 5x7". Dated at Troy, N.Y., Oct. 19, 1871 and completed in ink. Original document from the Haymaker Base Ball Club of Troy, New York informing a shareholder of a meeting to be held at "Calder's Office" , 8PM, Friday, October 20th (1871) with notation at bottom "Very important". Traditionally, ball club stockholder meetings would be held (as in this case) shortly after the end of the playing season for the purpose of dividing profits (or, in the not unusual case of a loss for the year, making assessments of members) and paying off the players. The Haymaker Club of Troy was one of the founding members of baseball's first professional league, The National Association, which functioned from 1871 through 1875. The NA was not a strong league, plagued by weak teams, loose discipline and contract-jumping players and was replaced by the still-extant National League in 1876. Troy entered the National League in 1879 and in 1883 transferred the franchise to New York City where it became known as the Giants. Among the notable players to perform for both the Haymakers and the Giants were four future Hall of Famers---Roger Connor, Mickey Welch, Tim Keefe and Buck Ewing. Light mailing folds but otherwise a fine, clean piece. Material from the National Association is exceedingly rare.

Single sheet, folded once, printed on both sides, size aprox. 9" by 10" (when unfolded). Extremely rare single sheet scorecard from one of the first baseball games played in the history of the National League during its inaugural season of 1876. The game was played in Chicago on May 20, 1876, (less than a month after the league's first game), between the Chicago and St. Louis clubs and featured A.G. Spalding pitching for the Chicago club. Also in the line-up for Chicago were Cap Anson, Cal McVey and Ross Barnes. The St. Louis club featured Lipman Pike, Denny Mack, Joe Clapp and George Bradley. The line-ups are pre-printed with the name of the player and his position. (Chicago won the game 6-3). The game is scored in pencil. Numerous advertisements for various businesses such as tobacconists, sporting goods, billiard halls, a tailor, a photographer and a beer saloon are printed on the sheet. Near fine condition. One of the earliest known scorecards for a professional game and, so far as we are aware, the earliest National League scorecard ever offered for sale.

Black cloth lettered and decorated in white with silhouette of original 1869 Red Stocking player front panel. 277 pp. Illustrated with numerous photographic plates of rare images of teams, ball parks, executives and players. The second edition, following the subscription edition of 500 copies published in the previous year and equally rare. After outlining early, pre-professional baseball in and around Cincinnati, this work explores the building and dominance of the first openly professional team, the Red Stocking Base Ball Club, a team so powerful that it went undefeated from late 1868, through the entire 1869 season, and half of the following season. Led by one of the Father's of Baseball, manager and center fielder Harry Wright and his brother, star shortstop George Wright, this legendary group rolled over all opposition until losing an extra inning game to the Brooklyn Atlantics in June, 1870. Final section covers Cincinnati ball from 1876 to 1908. A cornerstone of any serious baseball library. This a tight copy despite rubbing to the cloth leaving white cover decoration about 70% present and effacing the spine lettering.
