Basis for the 1932 Will Rogers movie, another version in 1965 and two Broadway plays. A tight, fine example. In the original vintage dust jacket with striking  design, bright and near fine with a couple of very short closed tears. A very nice copy indeed.

Octavo in green cloth lettered and decorated in black. Map endpapers in red and black; 310 pp. plus final leaf of publisher's announcements. Color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-acress-the Water" and seven additional black and white illustrations by the author in the etxt. The fourth impression and final printing of the first edition; due to wartime restrictions, only 4000 copies of this edition were printed (and there was only one color plate) bringing the total of all four printings of the first edition to 8877 copies beween 1937 and 1946. A tight, near fine example, very slight fade to the outer edges and  a touch of minor rubbing at the foor edge of the spine. No dust jacket.
