Small manuscript receipt 2 1/2" x 7 1/2" dated Feb 8, 1792 and signed "Daniel Bayley" Soiling and folds but all writing is bold. In 1764 Daniel Bayley, a potter by trade, bought a pottery business and shop and on Summer Street in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He engaged in the making and selling of earthenware but at the same time began to print and sell music and singing books, one of the very first American printers to do so. He died prior to March 27, 1792 (when his estate entered probate), making this one of the last documents he signed. His signature is considered one of the scarcest and most difficult to obtain of any early American printers.

Typed letter dated 1948, signed in full in ink. Braithwaite writes to a Boston bookseller regarding the purchase of books about Charlotte Bronte and the Bronte sisters (for which he apparently included a check for $3.25). He also inquires about three other Bronte-related works for which he is searching. Mailing folds, a small pencil notation in the upper corner indicating that a check for $3.25 was included and a date of receipt stamp. William Braithwaite (1878-1962) was a prominent African-American poet, author, anthologist and editor. His first volume of poetry. "Lyrics of Life and Love", was published in 1904; his work about the Brontes, "Bewitched Parsonage" appeared in 1950.

Single sheet, written recto only and dated at Princeton [New Jersey] Jan. 7, 1835. To an unnamed recipient, the letter opens by asking the man to attempt to acquire from New York booksellers a copies of two German religious works. Hodge goes on to comment on the reception received by the recipient's "commentary" and the upcoming review of it in a publication. Signed "C. Hodge. Generally clean, light mailing folds and with a small chip to the lower left corner not affecting the text. Charles Hodge (1797-1878) was a noted Presbyterian educator and author. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) and in 1822 marries Sarah Bache, a great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin. He served as the head of the Princeton Theological Seminary from 1851 until his death in 1878. Hodge authored numerous books on religion, his most widely known being the 3-volume "Systematic Theology" (1871-73). His last book "What Is Darwinism?" (1874) likened Darwinism to atheism.

Single sheet note paper from "Office of Ballou's Publications, No. 22 1/2 Winter Street, Boston, Mass". 5" x 8" written recto only. Dated Sept. 24, 1862. To a Chas. K, Gallup of Troy, N.Y. who had written to request Ballou's autograph.: "Dear Sir--I enclose you the autograph which you desire & am happy to gratify you in this matter. Yours very truly/ M.M. Ballou". Clean and bright, light mailing folds. Maturin Murray Ballou (1820-1895) was a Boston born and based writer and publisher. His career began in the newspaper trade in the 1830s and he authored a number of children's books published in the 1840s. He was co-founder of "Gleason's Pictorial Magazine" (later changed to "Ballou's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion') a regional competitor of Harper's Weekly. He was also the first editor of the Boston Daily Globe. He traveled the world in 1882 and over the next decade and more wrote a number of travel books.

One sheet, 4to, printed recto only and partly filled in by hand. A "Memorandum of Agreement" dated Aug. 16, 1890 between the People's Publishing Company of Chicago and one Wm. A. Lightner of Landisburg, Perry County, Pennsylvania. The contract states that Mr. Lightner will "...devote his entire time and attention, giving thereto at least eight hours time from every day, except Sunday and holidays...to the service of [the publishing company]...to personally make sales of the School Book Memberships...and to hire solicitors to make such sales...". For his labors, Mr. Lightner was to be paid $3.25 a day plus a 10% commission. Clean, with mailing folds.

First edition. 24mo. in dark brown cloth with design in blindstamp and decorative device in gilt, spine lettering and design in gilt. 104 pps.with frontispiece drawing titled "Christmas Tree" depicting a decorated, candlelit tree with toys beneath in the midst of a domestic scene of family with little children. Contains one addlitional plate "Christmas Eve" showing people gazing into a toy shop window. This actually is a Christmas-themed book (as many of this era with similar titles are not) which purports to provide the true meaning of the hoiliday while gives glimpses of Christmas scenes throughout the New England town in which the protagonist and his family live.. The introductory chapter, in which the minister tells of the First Christmas, contains the following passage: "The Bible tells you nothing about Santaclaus (sic), does, it?"(asked Frank). Santaclaus was a character about which Frank had heard something, though not half so much as some other lads in the neighborhood...". A very good copy, spine gilt still bright and with the spine a touch sunned; shallow frayinng at the spine ends. Scattered foxing throughout and with an old gift inscr. dated 1859 on the front pastedown and lacking the front free (blank) endpaper. Quite a nice little book.

Handwritten letter on black-bordered mourning note paper stamped "Macmillan and Co./ Publishers to the University of Oxford/ 16, Bedford Street, Covent Garden, W.C./ London. 4 1/2" x 7 1/2" written recto only. Dated Feb. 19, 1867 to one Ernest Jones of Edinburgh and Manchester. It states in part, " I am sorry that we cannot undertake the publication of your volume of Selected Poems, if for no other reason, yet because our hands are very full..." Macmillan goes on to say that he is familiar with some of Jones' poems that appeared elsewhere earlier and suggests that one of his publishing colleagues, Chapman & Hall, might have an interest. Signed "Alex. Macmillan". Mailing folds and a few light smudges. Alexander Macmillan (1818-1896) began his career as a book seller in Cambridge and later founded with his brother the publishing concern that still exists today.

Handwritten letter, single sheet written recto only. Dated at Tiffin, Ohio, February 27, 1891. To a Mr. Dalzell concerning a tribute to General Sherman as well as local political matters. W.H. Gibson was Colonel (alter General) of the 49th Ohio Vols during the Civil War, serving under Sherman at Shiloh, Mobile, Vicksburg, etc. Most famously, he delivered what came to be known as "The Old Flag Speech" in 1864 when he returned the regiment's battle flag to the people of Tiffin, Ohio, who had supplied it to the unit earlier in the War.

Single sheet 6 1/4" x 8" written recto only. Content regards prohibitions against the "eating of blood". Heading reads: "Sanguis/ Eating of blood forbidden" followed by relevant quotations from scripture (Gen. ix.4 and Leviticus: xvii.10) and notation of other scriptural passages. There is a small numeral "103" at the top corner. Even more interestingly at the bottom of the sheet is affixed a strip paper contemporary in consistency and handwriting to the main document with the name " Brook Taylor" and "Bifrons 9 July 1709". Generally clean and clear, lower right edge a bit ragged, not affecting text. This is a piece that encourages speculation as to origin and intent. Brook Taylor was an early 18th century English mathematician, formulator of what came to be known as "Taylor's Theorem" which by 1772 was called "the main foundation of differential calculus". By about 1715, Taylor had become increasingly interested in philosophy and religion and it is known that he wrote an unpublished treatise "On The Lawfullness of Eating Blood" sometime after 1719. The offered piece appears that it could be either a part of or a transcription of a portion of that work. In a final twist, the name of Taylor's estate "Bifrons" that appears on the document, was also the name of a major demon Bifrons, also called the Earl of Hell, who had twenty-six legions of demons serving under him. In all, an intriguing piece with its undercurrent vampire theme, connection to a famed mathematician, and "demonic" place name.

Four pp., quarto sized, written on four sides. Heading reads "Address/ On the opening of the Baltimore Theatre and Circus/ September 10th, 1829" Handwritten manuscript completely fills three sides and a small portion of the final side, signed "Porcius". The address, largely composed in loose verse, begins: "Where am I now? Where do I now appear? Is it a dream or am I really here? Enchantment sure, has waived her magic wand, opening new scenes of joy in Maryland...". Much of the address is a glowing paean to Baltimore, its history, historical importance and attractiveness for natives and visitors. Part of the central portion refers to the theater itself and its attractions: "...This very house--these walls, and this high roof/ Of growing greatness is another proof/ And here the busy crowd will oft resort/ To see the Manly, Noble, Circus sport/ to see the War Horse bounding o'er the plain. With riders fearless, even without a rein/ Bold , active, daring, doubtless, in each scene/ The Song--the dance, will often intervene/ The Theatre's beloved, enchanting art..." Light folds from where the piece was folded in quarters, archival reinforcement to some of the folds that do not affect the text. Although only signed with the pseudonym "Porcius" it is known that the address was written by Mrs. Robert Morris of Philadelphia and read on Opening Night by Mrs. Hill, a member of the company appearing at the theater. According to Scharf's "History of Baltimore City and County, Maryland" (1881, the Baltimore Theatre and Circus (later and more famously known as the Front Street Theatre) was officially opened on September 10, 1829 under the management of Mr. W. Blanchard. Opening Night featured an equestrian act (for which Blanchard was famous) followed by a musical farce titled "The Spoiled Child". Ticket prices were 50 cents for boxes, 25 cents for the pit and 25 cents for "the colored section". The original theater burned down in the winter of 1838 and was rebuilt for reopening in December of that year. Many of the leading American and British stage personalities appeared here, including Jenny Lind in the 1850s.

Heavy stock card 6 3/4" by 3 1/2" signed "V. Steffansson" with further notation in his hand "Harvard Club/ N.Y. City" and "For letters only." Undated. A fine, clean example. Vilhjalmur Steffanson (1879-1962), Canadian born of Icelandic descent, was a major figure in 20th century Arctic exploration and ethnology. He worked extensively among the Inuit people of Arctic Canada and on one of his expeditions discovered a previously unknown tribe of blond Eskimos. In later life, he lived in New York City and was a frequenter of Greenwich Village cafes in the 1920s and 30s.

Handwritten letter on black-bordered note-paper, folded in two and written on two sides. Dated from Marston's residence, Jan. 26, 1910. Contains Christmas greetings to the recipient as well as news of Marston's sister's death and other matters. Also included is a small folding cachet that opens to show on the left side a photograph of Marston titled "E.M. in his 85th year--taken by Kathleen--Oct. 1909" and printed on the right side with Christmas and New Year greetings and with the name of the recipient written in by Marston. Both pieces clean and fine. Includes envelope made out to R.R. Bowker, 298 Broadway, New York. Edward Marston, a figure in the London publishing world of the latter half of the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries, was also a noted angler who wrote "Fishing for Pleasure and Catching It" (1906) as well as numerous articles and essays on fishing under the pen name "The Amateur Angler".

Autograph letter signed in full, two pp. folded (written on all four sides). Dated 1st May, 1863 at Washington. Sumner's handwriting being virtually indecipherable, it is difficult to determine the content but it appears to concern some manner of appointment to a position ("Fitchburg" and "Provost Marshall" can be made out). Light mailing fold and two small holes near the top edge where the letter was apparently was placed into a binder, not affecting the text). Charles Sumner (1811-1874) from Massachusetts was an American statesman who rose to great prominence in the Civil War era. A staunch abolitionist, he was famously beaten with a stick on the floor of the U.S. Senate by North Carolina Representative Preston Brooks. Although friendly with Lincoln, he was the leader of the Radical Republicans and, after the War, favored harsh reconstruction terms for the South and championed civil rights for freedmen.

The way in which the Santa Claus legend is presented to children varies so greatly:. at one extreme the the heaviky realistic, the presentation of as of an actual fact...This is really a lie and is always found out as such by children...At the other extreme, a fanciful, imaginative telling of the quaint, friendly idea of Santa Claus, as little realistic as any other fairy-story, which is litle by little assimilated by the child without shock..." Ink signature "Maxfield Parrish" om otherwise blank business-sized card. Narrow stain at left upper edge from old tape, not affecting the signature. Maxfield Parrish (b. 1870 in Philadelphia) was an American painter and illustrator. His career as an illustrator began in 1897 with a commission to illustrate Baum's "Mother Goose in Prose"; he became one of the most recognizable and popular illustrators with his artwork gracing such books as Field's "Poems of Childhhod", "The Arabian Nights" and his own "The Knave of Hearts" as well as many magazines of the first two decades of the 20th century. Parrish remains today one of the most popular and collected illustrators of the his era.
