Two-page folder in light blue printed stiff wrappers. The recto / title page has a 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" contact print of Frederick Hill Mesreve over his blue ink signature; the verso has two similar size contact prints, one a formal pose of Abraham Lincoln as President seated at a small table with his top hat and an inkstand on the table top; the other is a formal portrait of Mary Todd Lincoln, seated, in an elaborate light colored gown. These two are noted below the images as being "Contact prints from the original glass plate negatives by Matthew B. Brady in the Meserve Collection'. Some light soiling to the wraps; the interior sheet and the photographs are in fine, bright condition.

First U.K. edition. A fully fine copy in fresh, flawless dust jacket. The jacket of the British edition is completely different from the U.S.--solid black lettered in white trimmed with red and with a candle-lit Lestat in 19th c. garb. Very difficult to find in this unimpeachable condition.

Single sheet, folded once, printed on both sides, size aprox. 9" by 10" (when unfolded). Extremely rare single sheet scorecard from one of the first baseball games played in the history of the National League during its inaugural season of 1876. The game was played in Chicago on May 20, 1876, (less than a month after the league's first game), between the Chicago and St. Louis clubs and featured A.G. Spalding pitching for the Chicago club. Also in the line-up for Chicago were Cap Anson, Cal McVey and Ross Barnes. The St. Louis club featured Lipman Pike, Denny Mack, Joe Clapp and George Bradley. The line-ups are pre-printed with the name of the player and his position. (Chicago won the game 6-3). The game is scored in pencil. Numerous advertisements for various businesses such as tobacconists, sporting goods, billiard halls, a tailor, a photographer and a beer saloon are printed on the sheet. Near fine condition. One of the earliest known scorecards for a professional game and, so far as we are aware, the earliest National League scorecard ever offered for sale.

A solid, very good plus example, tight and with only modest rubbing at the extremities and very slight rubbing to the cover cartoon; small previous owner's signature front free endpaper. Octavo hardcover in mustard colored cloth with red, white and green tipped on front cover baseball cartoon, spine lettered and decorated in black. 218 pp. With sixteen monochrome photographic plates including portraits of Hall of Famers Jim O'Rourke, John McGraw, Connie Mack and Hugh Jennings as well as other notable minor league officials and a composite team portrait of the Charlotte Base Ball Club of 1902 (see below for important information on this image). Historical and often humorous anecdotes on baseball's minor leagues around the tunr of the 20th century. Ed Ashenback was the manager of the Syracuse team in the New York State League at time of publication, having played minor league ball from 1890 to 1904. Of particular importance is the composite team photo of the 1902 Charlotte team of the North Carolina League that features as a pictured member Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, the obscure player (he played one inning for the 1905 New York Giants and never came to bat) who achieved legendary status as a pivitol figure in W.P. Kinsella's "Shoeless Joe" and the movie "Field of Dreams". An extremely scarce baseball title.

A tight, bright copy, gilt still brilliant, rear hinge starting and with a miniscule bump at the top edge of the front board, neat prev. own. sig. dated 1905 on front free endpaper. An exemplary copy of this scarce work by one of the female literary giants of 20th century American literature.

Orange cloth stamped in black. 251 pp. Vintage mystery. A green ace of diamonds is the calling card for murder. Near fine, a bit bumped at the tips, narrow adheasion front free endpaper. In the original vintage dust wrapper boldly designed in black, yellow and green. The jacket bears the Hopkins imprint on the spine (as does the copyright page of the book though the book itself bears the A.L. Burt imprint on spine and title page) but the flaps have Triangle Books imprint and ads. Jacket is bold and bright with wear about the edges and narrow chipping haed edge of spine.

First edition thus, the first hardcover edition (first book printing was the extremely scarce 1901 pamphlet). Paper covered boards decorated in color with a gilt edged baseball bat tied about with black ribbon, gilt lettering. Classic woodblock illustrations. The most recognized American poem, "Casey" first appeared in a San Francisco newspaper in 1888 as a featured piece of humorous doggerel. Its ascension to immortal status was due primarily to actor and toastmaster DeWolf Hopper, who began reciting it at dinners and other functions, as well as on the vaudeville stage, around the turn of the century. Hopper claimed in his autobiography to have performed "Casey" over 100, 000 times in his career. This copy is a tight, fresh example, virtually unworn except for the most minor rubbing at the tips.
