Four pp., quarto sized, written on four sides. Heading reads "Address/ On the opening of the Baltimore Theatre and Circus/ September 10th, 1829" Handwritten manuscript completely fills three sides and a small portion of the final side, signed "Porcius". The address, largely composed in loose verse, begins: "Where am I now? Where do I now appear? Is it a dream or am I really here? Enchantment sure, has waived her magic wand, opening new scenes of joy in Maryland...". Much of the address is a glowing paean to Baltimore, its history, historical importance and attractiveness for natives and visitors. Part of the central portion refers to the theater itself and its attractions: "...This very house--these walls, and this high roof/ Of growing greatness is another proof/ And here the busy crowd will oft resort/ To see the Manly, Noble, Circus sport/ to see the War Horse bounding o'er the plain. With riders fearless, even without a rein/ Bold , active, daring, doubtless, in each scene/ The Song--the dance, will often intervene/ The Theatre's beloved, enchanting art..." Light folds from where the piece was folded in quarters, archival reinforcement to some of the folds that do not affect the text. Although only signed with the pseudonym "Porcius" it is known that the address was written by Mrs. Robert Morris of Philadelphia and read on Opening Night by Mrs. Hill, a member of the company appearing at the theater. According to Scharf's "History of Baltimore City and County, Maryland" (1881, the Baltimore Theatre and Circus (later and more famously known as the Front Street Theatre) was officially opened on September 10, 1829 under the management of Mr. W. Blanchard. Opening Night featured an equestrian act (for which Blanchard was famous) followed by a musical farce titled "The Spoiled Child". Ticket prices were 50 cents for boxes, 25 cents for the pit and 25 cents for "the colored section". The original theater burned down in the winter of 1838 and was rebuilt for reopening in December of that year. Many of the leading American and British stage personalities appeared here, including Jenny Lind in the 1850s.
