Single sheet 7 3/4" x 9 3/4", folded and printed in four sides. Masthead printed boldly "The Camp Kettle" with date line reading Vol.1 No. (indictinct), Hilton Nead S.C. Nov. 21, 1861. Top of lead column reads "The Camp Kettle is published every opportunity by the Field and Staff of the Roundhead Regiment, Col. Leasure, Commanding" This newsheet contains articles and notices about such events as the regiments difficult disembarkation in South Carolina, recruitment, the weather, contrabands, "Stirring Scenes", recruitment and deaths. Printed,a s would be expected, on poor quality paper. Quite worn along the folds with some separation, some additional staining. The "Roundhead Regiment" (100th Pennsylvania) was formed by Col. Daniel Leasure and consisted mainly of recruits from Lawrence County, Pa. (Col. Leasure was descended from Cromwell, hence his regiment's nickname). They were part of the larger force that took Forts Walker and Beauregard, Hilton Head and Lady's Island in early November, 1861.

Illustrated with woodcuts including such subjects as "Our Union Volunteers", "Benjamin Franklin, The Philadelphia Printer", "Blockading Fleet Off The Southern Coast", "Cruising After The Pirate Steamship Alabama", "Battle in Virginia" as well as the usual small bucolic vignettes common to almanacs.. Quite scarce (OCLC locates one copy only) . Some chipping to the egdes of the wraps otherwise generally very good. Single sheet folded quarto, written in pencil on all four sides. 5" x 8" (folded). Letter from a hospitalized Confederate soldier to his wife, dated Nov. 26, 1862 from Danville Hospital (Virginia). The soldier complains about conditions in the hospital and expresses his hope to return to his regiment where he will stand a better chance of getting a discharge. Reads in part: "...there is men here that has got one arm and they won't give them no discharge nor no furlows (sic) either... I had rather be with the regt than to be here for it smells so bad with the fever that it is enough to make a well man sick...I would be better to get to ( ? ) before the regt got away and if I did not get able to go with them I may get a furlow or a discharge and it would be better than to have to go to Alabama or Misisippi (sic) for I can ride all the way to Nashville...". Signed only as "your husband". Mailing folds and some discoloration to the first page. Writing a bit light but competely readable.
