Brief handrwitten letter on 4 1/2" x 7" notepaper, one sheet folded and written on front and rear sides. Addressed to a Mr. Pender and concerning the fact that Byron had left early a perfromance for which Pender had provided a box. Signed "H.J. Byron" and dated March 7th, 1872 at 14 Southampton Street/ Strand. Mailing folds and some separation at folds. Henry James Byron (1835-1884), a second cousin of Lord Byron, was an English dramatist, director and actor as well as journalist and editor for publication dealing with the stage.

First American edition. 1882 (1881). First issue with "1881," on copyright page. Green-brown cloth with gilt decorations; dark brown endpapers. 520 pps. Generally very good, Some wear and shallow loss at the foot of the spine, shallow fraying at top spine edge, wear at the tips. Front and rear hinges strating but text block is still firm. Tiny 19th century booksellers ticket as well as prev. own. bookplate front pastedown.

First edition. 12mo. in dark olive green cloth stamped in gilt and with decoration and line drawing of Washington Square in dark brown. 266 pp. plus 6 pp. of publisher's ads at rear. Frontispiece and five additional full page plates plus additional drawings at chapter headings by George Du Maurier. A tight, very good example, small slit to rear outer gutter near the top, small nick to the cloth at spine just above title, extremities lightly rubbed and a thumb-nail sized smudge top right front cloth. A very acceptable copy indeed.
