Typed Letter Signed By Branch Rickey Regarding Sale of His Shares in the Brooklyn Dodgers 1950
(Robinson, Jackie) Rickey, Branch

1950. Typed letter, single sheet, dated December 5, 1950 signed in ink by Baseball Hall of Famer Branch Rickey. The letter is addressed to the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club and instructs the transfer of his shares in the Brooklyn Dodgers to Walter O'Malley's holding company. Rickey, best known as the man who signed Jackie Robinson to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 thereby breaking major league baseball's color barrier, fell out of favor when O'Malley assumed control of the Dodgers in July, 1950. Despite the fact that Rickey had built the team into a powerhouse, O'Malley forced him out, thereby giving him complete control of the team (which he would move to Los Angeles several years later). Rickey (d.1965) was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. Letter is clean and crisp, one light mailing crease.
