1876 Scorecard from the First Year of the National League, for a Game Between Chicago and St. Louis
(BASEBALL)
1876. Single sheet, folded once, printed on both sides, size aprox. 9" by 10" (when unfolded). Extremely rare single sheet scorecard from one of the first baseball games played in the history of the National League during its inaugural season of 1876. The game was played in Chicago on May 20, 1876, (less than a month after the league's first game), between the Chicago and St. Louis clubs and featured A.G. Spalding pitching for the Chicago club. Also in the line-up for Chicago were Cap Anson, Cal McVey and Ross Barnes. The St. Louis club featured Lipman Pike, Denny Mack, Joe Clapp and George Bradley. The line-ups are pre-printed with the name of the player and his position. (Chicago won the game 6-3). The game is scored in pencil. Numerous advertisements for various businesses such as tobacconists, sporting goods, billiard halls, a tailor, a photographer and a beer saloon are printed on the sheet. Near fine condition. One of the earliest known scorecards for a professional game and, so far as we are aware, the earliest National League scorecard ever offered for sale. (Item ID: X173)
