Poinsett concerning the protection of the northern and eastern borders of the U.S. Poinsett offers his opinion that land defenses are lacking due to over expenditure on the Navy. Also included are exerpts from a letter of General Winfield Scott in which he expresses his opinion of the minimum number of artillery and infantry regiments required for the northern and eastern frontiers and borders, specifically the eastern coastline from Florida to Maine and the Great Lakes region from Fort Brady to Green Bay and Fort Winnebago.
